Open Question: I am looking for an obscure country song,?

I used to have a copy of it and may still do but can not find it. It starts out in the beginning a kid is walking home from school carrying all his books and he drops one and the singer helps him pick them up. They become friends and go through school and at graduation the boy with the books is valedictorian and during his speech he reveals that he had planned on killing himself the day they met but didn't because the singer had befriended him. I am pretty sure it is by a guy and in the late 90s or early 2000s and at one point I thought it may be by Tim McGraw but went through all his song titles on his albums and none seem right so I am not sure.
